5 Moments That Defined a Series

Every month or two, those of us lucky enough to report on video games are treated and get the first glimpses at rare instances of total brilliance, in character or environment design, soundtrack composition, or storytelling. As gamers, though, many of us have followed our favourite series’ since their first inception, waiting for the day we can scream “I TOLD YOU THIS SERIES WOULD BE BADASS” at our less devoted friends. Here are some of the moments that changed the game (“Oh, I see what you did there!”) forever.

Mario Kart 64 (N64) - The First Split-Screen Race
Mario Kart 64 is one of those rare games that friends these days will still gladly set up and play together. It had the perfect blend of unpredictability, challenge and competition that could keep players entertained for hours on end, and the courses were so varied that by the time you had run through them all, you were jumping to do it all again - and by the time you had done them all again, you were ready for a few rounds of the battle mode. Not only did it have a perfect mix of gameplay elements, but the split-screen implementation worked fantastically well. Despite subsequent releases throwing up a greater variety of weapons, characters, vehicles and tracks, Mario Kart 64, with its simplicity, remains the most charming of all.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) - Approaching the Castle
Although the Legend of Zelda series has always had a strong following, it wasn’t until Hyrule was fully developed in 3D that most of us knew how captivating a place it was. A true innovation, Ocarina of Time combined some devilish dungeons with a world that seemed full of life (or devoid of life, depending on which era you were playing), and a score that accompanied each landscape to the tee; even typing this has me humming the tune from the Hyrule field. Without getting lost in a universe of nostalgia and fond memories, Hyrule truly was a world designed for players to get lost in.

Grand Theft Auto III (PS2/XBOX/PC) - The First Crime Spree
Grand Theft Auto III reminds me of a simpler time, one where I didn’t waste the day on facebook, but instead kicked the footy around the backyard by myself. When I first played GTA III, I was stunned. Having already played GTA 2, I was no stranger to the premise, but seeing someone carjack an innocent driver, in three dimensions and at my command, was just so real. The endless crime sprees, with multiple tank runs, never tired; neither did listening to the police radio describe my antics. Grand Theft Auto III spawned what has become undoubtedly one of the most famous media franchises of all time, and it goes without saying that what little we know of GTA V already has me as excited as I was the first time I stole a Banshee from the car yard near 8-Ball’s.

FIFA Football 2008 (PS3/X360) - The First Kickoff
Controversial it may seem to suggest this, but every football fan agreed that Pro Evolution Soccer dominated the PlayStation 2 and XBox. FIFA’s rise to prominence coincided with the release of the next generation consoles, and although it took a couple of years until it finally held the mantle, FIFA 2008 laid the platform with a vastly improved physics engine and some gorgeous player models. The inclusion of the A-League for the first time also helped its cause Down Under.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PC, X360, PS3) - The First Online Round
Whether you love it or hate it, Call of Duty 4 revolutionized online shooters. The killstreaks, perks and leveling system ensured no two matches felt the same. I remember the first time I played online at a friend’s house, using the old “pass the control” routine every time we died. Call of Duty 4 was so easy to pick up and play; everything felt so instinctive. While the series may not be known for its innovations, the fact that it continues to grow in popularity is testament to its successful FPS formula.

I couldn't agree more about GTAIII. From the moment I first laid my eyes on the gameplay I was totally amazed. Me and my mates used to spend whole weekends just playing that, half the time just going around causing havoc and seeing who could get the best multi kills n stuff. I hadn't played previous GTAs either so it was all new to me.

Btw, the ground textures in that mario kart picture look amazingly clear and detailed... is that screenshot from an emulation or something?

That is one hell of a good spot, I thought nobody would pick it up. It's actually just an in-game texture pack that has been applied and then yes, run through an emulator.
I would probably place final fantasy 7 in there if I had a list like this.

Haha, not that hard for someone who's played it for 13 years or so :P
Bought GTAIII on release! On PC btw, it was also on PC :P

Counter Strike was my 1st online FPS game I played around 2003 followed by BF 1942 which are both good series :D. Counter Strike influenced many modern online FPS what we see today and the game CS 1.6 is still being played and used in gaming tournaments even it's nearly 10 years old. I can't wait for Counter Strike: Global Offensive this year.

True, I don't know how I missed that in the edit, but I will update the article. Thanks for pointing it out.

I was very close to putting CS in there ahead of COD but I feel COD really hammered it home on the consoles, and made it both a mainstream and "socially acceptable" activity (rightly or wrongly is another discussion).

Well you should write your own list! :) As you can see, this article was already quite long only 5 titles long, and unfortunately it had to be cut somewhere, but so many series have that one defining game that put it head and shoulders above the rest in the field.
I agree with all of those, I had forgotten about COD4 but I agree it still does have the PC online base which has remained level since MW2.
Most of my choices would be later entries in those series (like San Andreas for GTA) or good knock-offs (like Crash Bandicoot Racing and Shadow of the Colossus for Mario Kart and Ocarina of Time, respectively). But for shooters I'd have to go with Crysis. I'd sit there for hours just finding vastly different ways to kill 3 guys.

Anyways, another great list from MMGN. I love articles like these that get me thinking retro, really brings back memories. (love)
The first time approaching Hyrule castle was amazing.

Goodbye Deku Tree :D

yes it was viewtiful
cool story bro.

literally.

remember when Ray used to play us in Battle Mode on MarioKart and all the help we sought from others for LoZ:OoT?

great, great times. couldn't have put together a better list. kudos well deserved :P
Glad you put GTA in here.
cod 4 was just pure awesome, i think Mario 64 should have been there instead of Mario kart as it was way better and the 1st time we ever saw a 3D platform game, Mario Kart was the same as it was on the SNES
Considering I never experienced most of those moments above, here's my top 5 defining moments in gaming...

- Playing the first stage of Double Dragon on the Sega Master System with my bro and going... this game's awesome, thank god I let Dad pick out a game this time!
- Experiencing an RTS for the first time with the C&C three-mission demo (must have replayed that second mission so many times!)
- Experiencing deathmatch over LAN with the Quake 3 Arena beta... 3 maps, two models, the basic weapons and a dozen gamers eager to shoot each other to bits!
- Taking off in a plane in BF1942 and flying far enough to realise how big the map was. To me, this was open world gaming
- Getting into an 8 player co-op game of Resistance 2 in Split-Screen online mode (getting two people to play online on a single console is pure genius!)

Not being critical but I am puzzled as to why this article starts in the middle of a series when the foundation had been established earlier on.

Super Mario Kart SNES was the first split screen racing. Zelda III to me defined hyrule castle. And earlier versions of GTA were full of crime sprees.
I think the point that tommo is making is that these were the titles in the series which truly defined the series' potential and revolutionised their genres.

ie Mario Kart 64 inspired an influx of racing titles (see: DKR, Crash Team Racing), offered proper 3D visuals instead of mode-7/"fake 3D", and in general took the kart and multiplayer-racing genres to a new level.

As for OoT, honestly, I find it difficult to believe that the scale of hyrule in 3D could spark imaginations any less than in Zelda: LttP.. in a 2D world, OoT would not have been nearly as acclaimed as it was, and the third dimension was responsible for a lot of the magic people couldn't quite experience in the series' 2D counterparts. (although, it is personal experience, so i can't at all say you're wrong for thinking LttP defined hyrule)

OoT is also largely responsible for where the series is today.

As for the others, I really can't comment (not a big FIFA player, nor GTA or CoD), but it'd be a huge task to argue that CoD 4 was less responsible for the FPS genre today than any of its predecessors.

As explained, the idea of the article is that these are moments that defined the subsequent games in each particular series, as opposed to the earliest occurrence of a particular scenario. Otherwise, the article would be full of Pong references, Pac Man screenshots, and the like. It's a fair question though! And if Zelda III was the best bringing to life of Hyrule for you then that's good to hear! It is, of course, subjective and open to debate, certainly the above games have offered experiences that have well and truly altered the way I approach or approached other games of the franchise.
Point taken. But for interest:

Super Mario Kart was developed by Shigeru Miyamoto where as Mario Kart 64 was not (I think he was working on Zelda at the time). So while Mario Kart 64 may have had a bigger impact, it in itself was a "me too" game.

While Zelda III was 2d, it defined Zelda in a way that even one of the producers wants a remake of it. I think most Zeldas including OOT and TP are based on the ideas from Zelda III.

So while the 3D worlds are the easiest to copy for the series and for a range of "me too" games, the foundation for the games and the ideas did stem from earlier versions.
