Sony wants 10 year life-cycle for Vita

As with the PS2 and the ongoing success of the PlayStation 3, Sony says it wants to support the PS Vita for a full decade.

"We’re in year one, so we’ll be supporting it for some time," SCEA Vice President of Hardware Marketing John Koller told IGN.

"But yeah, it does have its own 10-year life cycle. All of our platforms do… it’s a marathon, not a sprint. We expect long-term success from all our platforms."

Supporting a console for 10 years doesn't mean it isn't going to be superseded before then. Sony continued to support the PS2 long after the PS3 was released to make it a 10 year platform.

10 years is good that means PS Vita has a lot of undiscovered potential. I disagree that people think Vita is expensive and lack of good games but It's more convenient and powerful gaming device with many features.

Well, provided piracy doesn't f*ck it up. I could see the Ps Vita as a niche platform surviving many years. It is waaaay too early to write the Vita off. 3DS struggled early for the same reasons the Vita is struggling now. The general consensus is that it's overpriced and lacks games. Nintendo cut price and fired their biggest gun, Mario. MK7 and 3d Land reversed the 3ds's fortunes. They followed them up with Kid Icarus and Mario Tennis and Nintendo's big title for this Christmas is Paper Mario. Sony really needs to fire it's big guns to reinvigorate the Vita. Announcing all new Vita entries in franchises like God of War, Gran Turismo and Socom. That and securing some big third party titles like Resident Evil, Final Fantasy and Monster Hunter. The PS Vita hardware has so much potential on its own, add to that the potential of Cross play and Cross controller. It would be a sad thing to see the PS Vita fail.

You can see it being used with the ps4 like the wii u and i can see them making it bigger ike the 3ds, So you can use it alittle like a tablet as well for movies etc..

I guess Nintendo are emos and not 'true people' lol just look at the Virtual Boy it barely lasted 12 months.

Well i just think people can think what they like without being stereotyped and 'true people' what the hell is that? nonsense is what it is a device can sink within 12 months so i think its fair to judge a month after release and who does it hurt anyway? plus think of it this way, say the iPhone 6 released to poor sales no giant queues outside Apple stores, you telling me you wouldn't judge that? please -_-

if they can get awesome cross-platform use with the ps4 and Sony build upon their movie/music service, there's every good reason to be supporting it for 10 years. Whether it'll be able to compete with hardware 10 years from now, we'll see..

People do not seem to give Sony much credit in the mobile handheld sector, sure it doesn't have a phone but seriously, do you really want to use this thing as a phone? focus on the gaming aspect, anything else will be meh. I think the new ways of playing games on the vita is pretty cool and it just hasn't hit it's strides.
Sony definitely have the money to keep pushing at it and

VITA/3DS > smartphone/tablet gaming

Wow even i managed to not being Nintendo into this conversation, but if you're going to i'll have to comment. For starters, i'm getting a Ps3 in 2 weeks, so not i'm not a complete fanboy. Any real gamer recognizes that ALL 3 current gen systems have pros and cons. I was primarily Wii and PC gamer because the Wii has more exclusives this gen that i wanted to play, (seriously if you cant find more than 25 A+ non-casual titles to play on Wii, you're just missing out) and my gaming PC meant that i got to play 99% of the games on 360/Ps3

Now with the impending Ni No Kuni and The Last of Us, i can no longer resist and i'm finally going to get a Ps3. Its a great time to get one because the vast range of awesome exclusives are really cheap now and i'm a huge fan of Studio Ghibli so getting Ni No Kuni was an absolute certainty. $200 for a preowned Slim at EB is a good price, and i'm paying it off alongside my WiiU preorder.

As for your comment, i've never been much for handhelds. I had a DS with Pokemon Heart Gold and Golden Sun Dark Dawn. Got 3/4 through Heart Gold before my son lost it, and i've still got Golden Sun sitting in the unplayed section. The 3DS though has had quite a bit of playtime and its a great machine IMO. All consoles have their core and casual games, and its up to us to find them. For sonys sake i hope the Vita succeeds at least financially, or they'll go bankrupt and exit the games industry stage-right.

You should buy a system because the software on it interests YOU. There's no reason to try and defend your opinion or justify your transaction against other people who bought different systems with different opinions and interests in software titles. I was going to buy one.......because I don't my 3DS anymore. For me the 3DS is too small and comfortable to play for longer periods. And I won't fork out again for a XL after supporting the handheld from its launch.

But.......it didn't have that 'wow' factor that makes me impulse buy. At the end of the day I'd be playing games in the same manners as my ps3, with average graphics and little to no innovation. Sure it's mobile......but I find with all my travel these days, I generally consume media more than play games.
