As we enter into a new console generation, and with PC gaming really ramping up yet again, we're often wondering what the future of gaming graphics will hold for us. Thanks to this latest video, we have an idea.

This video shows off a new technology called Separable Subsurface Scattering, designed specifically to be used for human skin in video games. SSS was written entirely in DirectX 10, rendering everything that is visible in the trailer is being rendered in real-time. Want to see something jaw dropping? Honestly, I hope gaming doesn't look this realistic in the future. I know it looks great, but I think you get to a point where looking too real takes out some of the beautifulness and uniqueness of games graphics and visuals that can only be enjoyed in gaming would be gone.

In my opinion anyway.

But yeah, this looks amazing. I really did think that was a real person.

I'm all for the improvement of graphics but I'd rather have improvment in game narritive. When graphics start to get too real then I get scared because I play a game to escape realism not to see it even more. I like the cartoonish side of games, I like being able to tell that it is an animation due to some simple z fighting or shell shading.

I checked the site and it looks like they haven't formed the eyes yet. Other than this looks beautiful. So realistic it's a little scary.

The problem is humans are so accustomed to seeing the face that it will never look real enough. There are just too many twitches and subtle movements in every single gesture that its too hard to emulate. As a still with eyes closed it looks impressive. But once animated it will lose it's sense of realism

and unnecessary computations (subtle movements)

those subtle movements would be much better served on a high value production movie or storybook type "game" where there's little input by the user.

I'd think it's easy to create such visuals without any movement, any physics. You'd think this tech has been around for a while, or at least hope it has been. At the end of the day it's the physics engine that is going to determine whether or not a graphics engine looks believable and awesome, or awful and/or "uncanny" (see "uncanny valley" on Wikipedia).

This is the first step. Now it's a matter of building the hardware and physics around what can be presented.

that what I was thinking, put some movement and physics on that bad boy and see how it goes. The engine may need a bit of adjustment so it works with movements like stretches and grooves of a face in motion or folds of skin when turning it's neck. I mean after all the engine only does 'skin' so it still wouldn't be completely real with the environments we have in games anyway.

I really don't feel it's the character that sets our imaginations but the setting the story takes place where we immerse ourselves in the characters perspective. It's really not a scary thought, more beautiful than anything.
